Korchip Corporation has serviced the global electronics industry since 1990 as a distributor for Samsung Electro-Mechanics. In 2002, Korchip developed the STARCAP range of Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) and have continued their research and development of innovative new products in this sector.
EDLCs, or as they are otherwise known, super-capacitors or ultra-capacitors, can hold millions of times more capacitance than standard capacitors and they are considered the future of green energy storage. Depending on the capacitance, EDLCs can be applied to a wide variety of applications. For example, for capacitances of less than one Farad (F), EDLCs can provide a back-up for data and maintain a Real Time Clock (RTC) when used as an auxiliary power system in the event the main power supply should fail.
For capacitances of tens, hundreds and even thousands of Farads, EDLCs are being used in applications such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPSs). EDLCs are also fast becoming an essential component in green power and sustainable energy applications such as solar, wind and other environmentally friendly renewable energy sources.
